Overwatch is easily the most fun I've had playing video games this year, and a clear pick for Best First-Person Shooter Of The Year. Better still, the game just keeps getting better as more content is added, competitive seasons play out, and special events bring new skins and other collectibles for your toons. I'm a little surprised I ended up liking Overwatch as much as I did. Maybe it was silly to "believe the hype" about the original game, but the sequel surpassed all my expectations. The excellent campaign coupled with the equally satisfying multiplayer make Titanfall 2 easily the most underrated games of the year. I ended up going with Titanfall 2 because its campaign was such an extraordinary achievement for a relatively new franchise, something truly unique in a sea of aging franchises. I admit, it was tough to pick between DOOM and Titanfall 2 for the silver medal. An excellent array of weapons and bad guys to kill with said weapons makes DOOM nonstop fun from start to finish. And the story is big and silly, never taking itself too seriously as you shoot and smash your way through mission after bloody mission. The level design is the best I've seen in a shooter in years. Titled simply DOOM, the fourth release in the long-running shooter franchise turned out to be a surprisingly excellent game. They simply outdid themselves in a year when every other shooter was also outstanding. DICE and EA truly outdid themselves with Battlefield 1. Between large scale battles using some of the industrial age's first tanks and an old WWI arsenal, and the incredible graphics, I found myself thoroughly immersed in the experience and the setting. Overall, a solid game but still tied down by the franchise's many tropes.Ī stunningly gorgeous game, Battlefield 1 matched a really fun large-scale multiplayer with a surprisingly good single-player campaign comprised of various short vignettes all across WWI's various battles. The game's competitive multiplayer mode was capable enough, but very similar to Black Ops III and failed to really stand-out against 2016's really tough competition. While it was a little less narratively ambitious than last year's Black Ops III, it still packed a powerful emotional punch and varied things up with space dog-fighting and a mission map. One of the most controversial games of the year, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare turned out to be a really solid space shooter with one of the best campaigns in a Call of Duty campaign in years.
